Located in the Νorthwestern part of the country, Ioannina sits in the center of a valley, amongst enormous mountains. The city's identity has been shaped by the Christian, the Islamic and the Jewish communities coexisting and leaving their mark in the city's historical center.
University of Ioannina is a Higher Education Institution based in Ioannina, founded in 1970. The establishment of the University of Ioannina marked the opening of higher education in the Greek region. Its departments began operating in 1964 as a branch of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Efforts for the establishment of a university date back to the late pre-revolution period. At that time, prominent Epirot intellectuals had ventured to establish university schools in the region.
Nowadays, the University of Ioannina features fifteen (15) Departments, with eighteen thousand three hundred fifty-six (18,356) students, and five hundred twenty-eight (528) Academic and Research staff. Our Special and Lab Teaching Staff lists twenty-eight (28) members in total.
This year the University of Ioannina celebrates 60 years of operation since its foundation in 1964.
